My first thought with Zouma was he wasnt busting a gut because he felt he didnt have too as Cresswell had him moving away from goal. I didnt think there was any chance of it being a red, Zouma was almost level and more central to the goal.

Re: Should it have been a red?
just looked up the wording of the rule for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity:

denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender's goal

The following must be considered:
• distance between the offence and the goal
• general direction of the play
• likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
• location and number of defenders

Let's face it, the ref didn't consider any of these things, he pulled out the card so quickly it was impossible for him to process the information. If he had, or even if VAR had intervened they would have had to have concluded that 3 out of 4 of those considerations pointed to no red card:

Dembele was outside the area so still some distance from the goal. His general direction of play was away from the goal and more towards the corner flag. Granted there was a high likeliehood of him gaining control of or keeping the ball but that is negated by the final point which is that Zouma was almost level with Cresswell at the point of contact and that couple with Dembele's direction of play meant that had he kept the ball he would have had to cut back in towards goal at which point Zouma would easily have been goal side if him which is a big fucking obsatcle for Dembele to get past

El Scorchio 11:43 Fri Apr 8

Exactly. It has always been a bone of contention for me since they introduced red cards for denial of a clear goal scoring opportunity that there is not also a red card for simulation in trying to create one (as in the situation here or taking a dive in the box for a penalty). Surely, that is equally unsporting behavior.

Re: Should it have been a red?
"his instant movement towards the pocket with no question of getting a second opinion of looking at it cemented my view that he was bent as fuck"

That was something I noticed. When he immediately reached for a card without a moment's thought I assumed he must keep his yellow in his back pocket for some strange reason. The fact that he was so eager was telling.

As for the argument about Cresswell being to blame. Bollocks. Cresswell was responsible for the foul, his responsibility ends there and the responsibility for the absolutely abysmal decision to card h lies entirely with the corrupt ref.

There should be a block in the stadium for old, cardigan wearing nerdy types to sit and knit bobble hats and talk stats.

They’re all on there posting about how disgraceful it is that people stand in the aisles in the lower tier.

One cunt on there going on about how his dad doesn’t attend cup games as he can’t guarantee he’ll know everyone sitting around him.

It’s a shame Kumb is the site that opposition fans look at, as it gives us a bad name.

Trundle,

Loads on Kumb suggesting it was a red.

Wouldn’t expect anything less from those wet blankets.

Re: Should it have been a red?
It wasn't a penalty and if you aren't going to use VAR for situations like this what's the point of it? Not blaming Cresswell at all but it's European football, full of cheats like that and even that slight hand on the shoulder gives the bloke the chance to cheat. Zouma also must have been really confident that it wasn't going to go anywhere because he was just jogging back. The Referee is behind the play though so can't see contact from where he is. The Referees whole performance was as close to corrupt as you can get.

Leroys Boots is the only person I've seen suggesting it was a red.

Were there more idiots on the match thread suggesting it was?

Even "rival" fans have said it was a load of old bollocks.

I'm sure if we can, then we will. Don't know if we'll get much change out of UEFA though.

I'd say we've got good grounds on video evidence. VAR or lack of really let us down though. Was it even checked?

Minimal contact
Dive
Wink
Not a clear goalscoring opportunity

But you never know.

Re: Should it have been a red?
Almost as bad was the Bowen yellow. I still haven't got a clue how or why it was given, especially when the incident happened directly in front of the linesman. At this stage of the competition that could have got him suspended, this cunt of a referee needs to be as far away from professional sport as possible

Re: Should it have been a red?
In the prem you can appeal a straight red right?
Can you do that with Uefa? Have the club bothered?

Re: Should it have been a red?
The ref was the most dodgy, biased cunt I have seen since Den Haag when the cunt booked our players for having their socks rolled down. European refs have generally been OK to date but this one was Herr Mike Dean. Wanker.

El Scorchio 11:43 Fri Apr 8
Re: Should it have been a red?
Never in a million years a red. I sit in the corner where it happened. We were all utterly bemused when he took the card out. Which he did as fast as he could. We were joking that he was bent or on the take, given how awful his decisions were.

What sickens me in this day and age of VAR and 100 camera angles and replays that decisions like that can be allowed to stand. For the wink and the rest of the video evidence the card should be rescinded and a ban applied to Dembele. Nothing will be done though.

Razzle 11:39 Fri Apr 8
Re: Should it have been a red?
Lets try and clear this shit up and demonstrate how poor this referee was.

Firstly the penalty:

Law 12 Fouls and Misconduct

denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick (unless as outlined below)

The following must be considered:

1. distance between the offence and the goal

the general direction of the play

l2. likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball

l3. location and number of defenders

Var protocol
1. A video assistant referee (VAR) is a match official, with independent access to match footage, who may assist the referee only in the event of a ‘clear and obvious error’ or ‘serious missed incident’ in relation to:

a. Goal/no goal
b. Penalty/no penalty
c. Direct red card (not second yellow card/caution)
d. Mistaken identity (when the referee cautions or sends off the wrong player of the offending team)

3. The original decision given by the referee will not be changed unless the video review clearly shows that the decision was a 'clear and obvious error'.

If he considered those then it is not a penalty - the only element that is contentious is that he may have regained control of the ball. By which time the goal scoring opportunity is over. As for the match official idoing VAR did he even check? They must have been jointly concluded the decision - there is no notification of review so you can only assume it wasnt.

Stopping the game for injuries
Law 5 Referee

stops play if a player is seriously injured and ensures that the player is removed from the field of play. An injured player may not be treated on the field of play and may only re-enter after play has restarted; if the ball is in play, re-entry must be from the touchline but if the ball is out of play, it may be from any boundary line. Exceptions to the requirement to leave the field of play are only when:

a goalkeeper is injured

a goalkeeper and an outfield player have collided and need attention

players from the same team have collided and need attention

a severe injury has occurred

a player is injured as the result of a physical offence for which the opponent is cautioned or sent off (e.g. reckless or serious foul challenge), if the assessment/treatment is completed quickly

a penalty kick has been awarded and the injured player will be the kicker

Another failure stopping the game for non-serious injuries. That happened twice.

The incident surrounding the throw in
Law 12 Fouls and Misconduct
Cautionable offences
A player is cautioned if guilty of:

delaying the restart of play

The referee decided to have a "word"

Those for me were the 4 main incidents where the referee failed in his application of law. ON the basis of that he should be dropped from UEFA listing.

Re: Should it have been a red?
Due to the speed of it, it was worthy of review, which would have shown the angle of travel (away from goal) The amount of contact, in relation to the going to ground (Which would have shown the winking cunt throwing himself to the floor

Compare the contact to Bowen who was shoulder charged in the back. with no attempt at taking the ball.

Re: Should it have been a red?
Well it was as soft a penalty as some of my 13.5 years old latest shits... Cresswell put himself in shit as soon as he put his hands on Dembele... don't touch him and it takes a red out of the equation... and agree with a lot on here if it happened up the other end there would be plenty screaming for a pen... and yes if it was given... again it would be soft. Was pretty fucked off with Zouma... his man he's let go there... and he's literally jogged back... if he had made a real attempt and busted a gut to help out Cresswell would it have been a different outcome?? Who knows...??
